Read about the Peace Academy at Santa Barbara High School which replaces the high school's Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, which was closed down due to I lack of enrollment.
the site at http://csf.colorado.edu has just about all the colleges with peace studies/conflict resolution classes in its list. Please see The "Conflictology" section for more resources of this nature.
Closer to Seattle is the Northwest Social Forum
Another local favorite is the Center for Spirituality & Justice
A most enjoyable and resourceful site:Vermont Peace Academy
Global Conflict Resolution Training Programs
Degree and Non-degree Programs
(Not all of these have web links at this time)
USA studies:
"The Plowshares Collaborative was formed in 2002 by Earlham College, Goshen College, and Manchester College to develop the strongest, most distinctive undergraduate program in peace studies in the United States. Remarkable triad of small Indiana colleges: all three offer undergraduate degrees in peace and conflict studies. Goshen also offers certifications (even one for elementary, middle and secondary school teachers in conflict transformation). Quote on the home page, as an example: "Peace is not an absence of war, it is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, justice." Baruch Spinoza
"Brandeis University's existing peace and conflict studies program" is only one of the parts of this university and their resources/approach to all. BA, MA, PhD in a myriad of course titles and programs [located in Waltham, MA.].
The International Center for Ethics, Justice and Public Life is the center.
"The Center for Applied Conflict Management (CACM) developed one of the earliest conflict resolution undergraduate degree programs in the United States, and has contributed to the development of the dynamic and rapidly growing fields of conflict resolution and peace studies." Kent State University, Kent, Ohio-since 1973 Political Science degree (CACM is part of that). and they even offer 12 hour training seminars for the public.
Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, University of Notre Dame. Certainly well-known, post-Joan's donation. Thorough M.A. and fellowships, undergraduate degrees are "supplemental" -the peace studies are simply added to whatever a student is majoring in. The beautiful/exciting aspect of this school is it's internationality, students from all over the world, all continents, etc. Learning with positive difference.
Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, Univ. of California. Based in San Diego (with Joan K. donation in addition). One of its advantages: programs, seminars, resources...it is multi-campus; they will be "everywhere." Program partners with Scripps Oceanography, Los Alamos Laboratories, Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy.
· Center for Global Peace at UC Irvine co-design events, etc. (Irvine has its own, quite different, program.)
USA:
George Mason University, Fairfax, VA. Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, MA and PhD, Certificate for Health Professionals
American University, The Division of International Peace and Conflict Resolution obtains degrees via the School of International Service, also a Center for Global Peace
Conflict Research Consortium, University of Colorado San Francisco State, Certificate in Conflict Resolution.
Canada:
University of Toronto, Peace and Conflict Studies, extensive undergraduate only;
Peace Research Institute - Dundas, Ontario.
Japan: [note the Honolulu office], Toda Institute honors the life and work of Josei Toda, a lay Buddhist organization dedicated to peace research and education. (Josef was a pacifist during WWII.) Majid Tehranian is the director, residing in Honolulu, and there is an office there. Primarily
devoted to seminars and research. No degrees to speak of. (Most recent program at Simon Fraser University this past summer.)
Europe:
By no means inclusive.
Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, extensive English-speaking peace research and conflict studies;
INCORE (International Conflict Research) at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland and the UN, dedicated to research
and seminars; the Northern European research centers (of the impressive sort)-- SIPRI, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Sweden;
TAPRI, Tampere Peace Research Institute, Finland.
...Conflictology..the Central Asian term for conflict studies. Headquarters seems to be in St. Petersburg: St.Petersburg Conflict Resolution Center. The centers are particularly focused around mediators, training and inspiring. St. Petersburg State also has degrees inside the department of philosophy.

Artistic rendering of concepts & ideals as related to Purpose and eventual goals of vUSPA, including:
* Eagle: integrative overview and foresight, as well as clothed by the more peaceful of the traditional symbols in the original seal of the United States (olive branch, banner "E Pluribus Unum" - meaning "Of Many, One"). * Dove: peace, non-violence, gentleness. * Olive Branch: ages old symbol for Peace. In "the Great Seal," where the eagle is also holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, the eagle has its head turned towards the olive branch, said to symbolize a preference for peace. * Globe: global citizen oriented. * Open Book: Right Use of Knowledge, Right Parenting, Right Use of Science * Circle of Symbols of World Religions: Ecuminicism of Beliefs. * 4 Directions Hoop: a symbol common to almost all Indigenous people of the Americas, but of other world cultures as well, The four cardinal points of the medicine wheel can be used to explain the complex reality of personal and community development. artwork/rendering by Chris Pringer |
