FLASH!: Please take the time to visit the website of the National Campaign for a Peace Tax Fund so that you have a chance to read and contemplate the comparative advantages of H.R. 2037 as it was submitted with numerous sponsors on May 8, 2003. This is an extremely important aspect of the work in supporting and encouraging conscientious objection status. It is also the most practical way we can develop the nationwide financing for a Department of Peace and a Peace Academy System. Go to info@peacetaxfund.org. Local Peace Studies Programs

          The Peace and Justice Studies Association (PJSA) is a non-profit organization that was formed in 2001 as a result of a merger of the Consortium on Peace research, Education and Development (COPRED) and the Peace Studies Association (PSA). Both organizations provided leadership in the broadly defined field of peace, conflict and justice studies. We are dedicated to bringing together academics, K-12 teachers and grassroots activists to explore alternatives to violence and share visions and strategies for social justice and social change. PJSA also serves as a professional association for scholars in the field of peace and conflict resolution studies. [Local ref: The Evergreen State College in Washington State has one of many ongoing Peace and Justice Studies programs, by the way, as well as ">regular current-topic conference events.]

          The University For Personal And Global Peace - Founded by Dr. Sherry Daniel to provide people of all ages with training in the "Big Picture Approach," a technology for peace that enables people to bridge the gap between their vision of peace and their personal and global reality. A series of "Big Picture Think Tanks for Peace" are being sponsored to advance research into new ways to create peace on a personal and global level. The think tanks are offered in Seattle. The Peace Network offers free admission to those attending a Think Tank for the first time, as well as a free CD entitled, "The Search for Peace" by Dr. Shery Daniel.

Organizations Training Others in Conflictology and the Establishment of Peace

Global Conflict Resolution Training Programs
Degree and Non-degree Programs

(Not all of these have web links at this time)

USA studies:
          "The Plowshares Collaborative was formed in 2002 by Earlham College, Goshen College, and Manchester College to develop the strongest, most distinctive undergraduate program in peace studies in the United States. Remarkable triad of small Indiana colleges: all three offer undergraduate degrees in peace and conflict studies. Goshen also offers certifications (even one for elementary, middle and secondary school teachers in conflict transformation). Quote on the home page, as an example: "Peace is not an absence of war, it is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, justice." Baruch Spinoza

          "Brandeis University's existing peace and conflict studies program" is only one of the parts of this university and their resources/approach to all. BA, MA, PhD in a myriad of course titles and programs [located in Waltham, MA.].
          The International Center for Ethics, Justice and Public Life is the center.
          "The Center for Applied Conflict Management (CACM) developed one of the earliest conflict resolution undergraduate degree programs in the United States, and has contributed to the development of the dynamic and rapidly growing fields of conflict resolution and peace studies." Kent State University, Kent, Ohio-since 1973 Political Science degree (CACM is part of that). and they even offer 12 hour training seminars for the public.
          Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, University of Notre Dame. Certainly well-known, post-Joan's  donation. Thorough M.A. and fellowships, undergraduate degrees are "supplemental" -the peace studies are simply added to whatever a student is majoring in. The beautiful/exciting aspect of this school is it's internationality, students from all over the  world, all continents, etc. Learning with positive difference.

          Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, Univ. of California. Based in San Diego (with Joan K. donation in addition). One of its advantages: programs, seminars, resources...it is multi-campus; they will be "everywhere." Program partners with Scripps Oceanography, Los Alamos Laboratories, Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy.
· Center for Global Peace at UC Irvine co-design events, etc. (Irvine has its own, quite different, program.)

USA:
          George Mason University, Fairfax, VA. Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, MA and PhD, Certificate for Health Professionals
          American University, The Division of International Peace and Conflict Resolution obtains degrees via the School of International Service, also a Center for Global Peace
          Conflict Research Consortium, University of Colorado San Francisco State, Certificate in Conflict Resolution.

          Canada:
University of Toronto, Peace and Conflict Studies, extensive undergraduate only;
Peace Research Institute - Dundas, Ontario.

          Japan: [note the Honolulu office], Toda Institute honors the life and work of Josei Toda, a lay Buddhist organization dedicated to peace research and education. (Josef was a pacifist during WWII.) Majid Tehranian is the director, residing in Honolulu, and there is an office there. Primarily
devoted to seminars and research. No degrees to speak of. (Most recent program at Simon Fraser University this past summer.)

          Europe:
By no means inclusive.
Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, extensive English-speaking peace research and conflict studies;
INCORE (International Conflict Research) at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland and the UN, dedicated to research
and seminars; the Northern European research centers (of the impressive sort)-- SIPRI, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Sweden;
TAPRI, Tampere Peace Research Institute, Finland.

          ...Conflictology..the Central Asian term for conflict studies. Headquarters seems to be in St. Petersburg: St.Petersburg Conflict Resolution Center. The centers are particularly focused around mediators, training and inspiring. St. Petersburg State also has degrees inside the department of philosophy.

Some Organizations Working for Sustainable Peace

              The Department of Peace Campaign and Legislation (HR1673) seeks to make nonviolence an organizing principle in our society, and is related to the campaign for the (actual) U.S. Peace Academy. Please use the below information to contact your representative(s), to sign the DOP petition, and assist in getting the word out towards bringing about a Department of Peace.
           A Department of Peace would focus on nonmilitary peaceful conflict resolutions, prevent violence, promote justice and democratic principles to expand human rights. Domestically, the Department would be responsible for developing policies which address issues such as domestic violence, child abuse, mistreatment of the elderly, and other issues of cultural violence. Internationally, the Department would gather research, analyze foreign policy and make recommendations to the President on how to address the root causes of war and intervene before violence begins, while improving national security, including the protection of human rights and the prevention and de-escalation of unarmed and armed international conflict.
           The DoP systematically applies the power of peace to the eradication of root causes of violence, and we believe, is worthy of our collective support. Over the course of history people have always dreamed of peace, but we have never had a broad-reaching, well-funded, systemic structure to help make it a reality. We know that now is the time that we must cultivate a real and lasting peace in the world- the consequences of not doing so are almost too difficult to imagine.
           April 8th, 2004 marks the one-year anniversary of the introduction of the Department of Peace legislation (H.R. 1673) into the U.S. House of Representatives. It also marks the one-year anniversary of our Democracy Conference in Washington D.C., where hundreds of us from around the nation visited our congress members to lobby for the legislation.
           To find out more detailed information on this legislation, and how you can help us make it law, visit the DOP website at http://www.dopcampaign.org. You can also find statistics on violence and war, as well as frequently asked questions about this legislation. Others working on this campaign include The Renaissance Alliance.

             Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action Just North of Bremerton, WA - Founded in 1977, offers the opportunity to explore the meaning and practice of nonviolence from a perspective of deep spiritual reflection, providing a means for witnessing to and resisting all nuclear weapons, especially Trident. "Through nonviolent direct action we seek to go to the root of violence and injustice in our world and experience the transforming power of love." For a most effective means of documenting your intentions in Conscientious Objection (CO), you can Join GZ for civil disobedience (CD) or to assist via a peacekeeper role, via any one of three yearly vigils via GZ, including Mother's Day and Hiroshima/Nagasaki Day. (This links to GZ's pdf file for CO/CD. If you have trouble bringing up pdf files on screen, you can also right-click on the link and select "save target as" and download the file that way for later reading off-line.)
      Other actions provided for participation via GZ include Petition to release Jackie, Carol, and Ardeth, the Depleted Uranium Munitions Action Plan (here you can read the Depleted Uranium document from US Navy), and The case for abolishing nuclear weapons.

             "Feb, 15, 2003 was a mutation in the thinking of the world's people. Waging Peace, the Empowerment Projects latest documentary has just been completed, and they have offered it to us for fund-raising and to inspire and re-energize our communities. We can raise funds through house parties, salon showings, community events, and other venues, with discussions and action plans to follow.

Artistic rendering of concepts & ideals as related to Purpose and eventual goals of vUSPA, including:

      * Eagle: integrative overview and foresight, as well as clothed by the more peaceful of the traditional symbols in the original seal of the United States (olive branch, banner "E Pluribus Unum" - meaning "Of Many, One").
      * Dove: peace, non-violence, gentleness.
      * Olive Branch: ages old symbol for Peace. In "the Great Seal," where the eagle is also holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, the eagle has its head turned towards the olive branch, said to symbolize a preference for peace.
      * Globe: global citizen oriented.
      * Open Book: Right Use of Knowledge, Right Parenting, Right Use of Science
      * Circle of Symbols of World Religions: Ecuminicism of Beliefs.
      * 4 Directions Hoop: a symbol common to almost all Indigenous people of the Americas, but of other world cultures as well, The four cardinal points of the medicine wheel can be used to explain the complex reality of personal and community development.
