'Bush: No child left undrugged'

It's summer, and the sounds of vacationing children can be heard echoing through playgrounds and beaches across the nation. But, when little Johnny and Janie go back to school this fall, BushCo. has arranged for them to have something extra in their book bags. Not only will they be carrying pencils and crayons and notebooks and rulers, but also, bottles of psychotropic drugs!

Yes, thanks to the Orwellian named "New Freedom Initiative," passed by Congress last year, American kids, aged 3 to 18, can be evaluated at school by state-sponsored "advocates" to see if they are mental cases. If they're evaluated as such, they'll be forced to take drugs, possibly without parental consent.

Welcome to Soma-world, where you can watch your kids be reduced to extras in a "Night of the Living Dead" flick.

If this latest assault on families by BushCo. strikes you as being insane, it is. But, a plan such as this has already been implemented, way back in 1995, in (surprise!) Texas. The Governor pushing this plan? George W. Bush.

Ten years ago, Bush embraced The Texas Medication Algorithm Project, or TMAP, an alliance of individuals from the University of Texas, the pharmaceutical industry and the mental health and corrections systems of Texas. It was, largely funded by a Robert Wood Johnson grant (as in Johnson & Johnson), as well as several other drug companies.

TMAP was hailed as a great "success" in Texas by both political hacks and drug companies. Texas was "chosen," in part, because Bush loves Big Bidness and the state has the largest prison system in the country, with over 150,000 inmates plus a lot of folks in the mental health system to experiment on. There's also an incestuous relationship between state government and universities, hospitals, prisons and schools, with regents and administrators appointed by the governor. When it came time to push TMAP? Big pharmacy lobbyists descended like a swarm of blood-sucking bats and campaign contributions flowed to the governor, state lawmakers and even judges.

And, so, the state of Texas decided who needed to be medicated and who did not. Apparently, a lot of Texans needed meds. Big drug companies raked in the dough. Why? Because the state paid for "new", expensive, "state-of-the-art" drugs. (No cheap generics, puleeze.) One bi-product of this great success story? Today, two out of three foster children in Texas are on meds.

Olanzapine (trade name Zyprexa), one of the atypical antipsychotic drugs recommended as a first line drug in the Texas algorithm, grossed $4.28 billion worldwide in 2003 and is Eli Lilly's top selling drug. A 2003 New York Times article by Gardiner Harris reported that 70% of olanzapine sales are paid for by government agencies, such as Medicare and Medicaid.

Eli Lilly, manufacturer of olanzapine, has multiple ties to the Bush administration. George Bush Sr. was a member of Lilly's board of directors and Bush Jr. appointed Lilly's chief executive officer, Sidney Taurel, to a seat on the Homeland Security Council. When Dubya decided to run for President in 2000, Lilly made $1.6m in political contributions -- 82% of which went to Bush and the Republican Party.

If this "I was a grade school zombie" approach worked in Texas, surely, it would work across the country, thanks to the efforts of governor-turned-King, Dubya.

Back in 2001, Bush called for the creation of a New Freedom Commission on Mental Health. It was assembled in April, 2002, packed with big drug boosters and doctors who kowtowed to big drug companies. They were to assess the woo-wooness of Americans. Bush instructed more than 25 Federal agencies to develop a plan based on the Commissions findings.

About the same time, caught up in the drugging of America fervor, Pennsylvania decided to go the Texas route, led by a governor named Tom Ridge. It seemed like a slam-dunk job until one whistle-blower raised the alarm.

Allen Jones, an employee of the Pennsylvania Office of the Inspector General, found that key officials influencing his state's "zombie" plan received money and perks from drug companies. After trying to alert the authorities and getting shut down, he turned to the "British Medical Journal" and "The New York Times" in 2002.

As a result, he was thrown off his investigation and, ultimately, fired.

Why?

He had the nerve to say "the pharmaceutical industry has methodically compromised our political system at all levels and has systematically infiltrated the mental health delivery system of this nation."

"I was told that pharmaceutical companies are major political contributors and that I should not continue my probe," he said. "I was effectively threatened with loss of job, career and reputation, if I continued to investigate the pharmaceutical companies."

Jones said Bush's pro-drugging policy "doesn't have the Orwellian goal of drugging the populace for a political purpose; it's the Orwellian goal of drugging the populace for an economic purpose."

Remember: BushCo. equals privatization. Privatization equals Big Bidness. Big Bidness equals Big Money.

Jones also called the Pennsylvania = Texas gambit a "Trojan Horse." He saw the whole state/national deal as a way to ensure the sale of new (read: more expensive) psychiatric drugs. Because clinical trials did not favor these drugs, a new market had to be created nationwide. Some of the drugs had deadly side-effects. As in Texas, the proposed nationwide plan would force private insurers to pick up more of the tab.

Mr. Jones told the "British Medical Journal" that the same "political/pharmaceutical alliance" that generated the Texas project was behind the recommendations of the New Freedom Commission.

Note: At the outset of the Texas scheme, scientific testing was abandoned in favor of "Expert Consensus" put forth by drug company stooges. The list of drugs chosen by the Expert Consensus included Risperdal, Zoloft, Paxil, Zyprexa, Seroqual, Geodone, Depakote, Celexa, Wellbutron, Zyban, Remeron, Serzone, Effexor, Buspar, Adderall, and Prozac and all were manufactured by the companies who backed the Texas plan. So, for the New Freedom Initiative? Who needed science? All that was needed was a national "Expert Consensus" on the meds du jour.

And, so it went.

In 2003, The New Freedom Commission issued its findings. Surprise! The Commission found that: "despite their prevalence, mental disorders often go undiagnosed" and recommended comprehensive mental health screening for "consumers of all ages," including preschool children. According to the commission, "Each year, young children are expelled from preschools and childcare facilities for severely disruptive behaviors and emotional disorders." Schools, wrote the commission, are in a "key position" to screen the 52 million students and 6 million adults who work at the schools.

By doing this school-based testing, the commission expected to ensnare at least another six million persons not now receiving treatment. But who would decide the screening criteria? BushCo. ? The drug companies? What would be their qualifications?

Nobody's quite answered that question but I'm betting the screeners will be well paid stooges.

One recommendation of the commission was that the screening be linked with "treatment and supports," using "specific medications for specific conditions." It is no coincidence that, as in Texas, the treatments recommended for specific conditions are the newest state-of-the-art treatments that will bring in the most revenues for the drug companies.

One of these emerging treatments is a capsule implanted within the body that delivers doses of medication without the patient having to swallow pills or take injections. If a corrupt government ever wanted to exert control of its citizens, this is the way to do it.

Under the radar, Bush, then called for "The New Freedom Initiative" to be passed by Congress, under the guise of a "disabilities" bill. Hey, who doesn't want to help the disabled, right? How noble can you get?

Declared Bush: "My Administration is committed to tearing down the barriers to equality that face many of the 54 million Americans with disabilities..My New Freedom Initiative will help Americans with disabilities by increasing access to assistive technologies, expanding educational opportunities, increasing the ability of Americans with disabilities to integrate into the Workforce, and promoting increased access into daily community life."

Uh-huh.

Deeply buried within the law, -- which included passages stating that we Americans are hiding our mental illness because we feel "stigmatized" about seeking "help" for our "disability" -- was the fact that our kids are being targeted for new, iffy drugs. Essentially, we don't know how screwed up we are, so all this is for our own, and our kids' good.

Congress passed the initiative last year because, as we all know, members of Congress don't actually read much of what they sign: witness The Patriot Act.

A few folks reacted to the faux disability bill in a less than enthusiastic way.

Holistic mental health advocate David Oaks said that the new law will result in "hundreds of thousands of more kids being put on psychiatric drugs."

Oaks, the director of the mental health advocacy group named "Mind Freedom," said that the issues of a child's mental health are more complicated than just testing for disorders (Are your kid's frisky? Drug 'em.). Oaks is the fella who dubbed our alleged President's plan "No child left undrugged."

Of course, The American Psychiatric Association supported this new law. But a lot of folks didn't. (Please note: Not many MSM outlets have even addressed this, so we're all in the dark unless you surf the net.)

The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) woke up and smelled the Prozac. It declared that The New Freedom Initiative equaled mandatory psychological testing of every child in America without the consent of their parents.

Last year, Republican Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who's a doctor, and a life-time AAPS member, tried to stop the plan by introducing an amendment that would allow parents to have the last say. He was blown out of the water by his house-mates. (Now, he's championing the "Let Parents Raise Their Kids Act.")

Wrote Paul: "Psychotropic drugs are increasingly prescribed for children who show nothing more than children's typical rambunctious behavior. Many children have suffered harmful effects from these drugs. Yet some parents have even been charged with child abuse for refusing to drug their children. The federal government should not promote national mental-health screening programs that will force the use of these psychotropic drugs such as Ritalin."

The Federal bill does not, on its face, require mandatory mental health testing to be imposed upon state or local schools. But, it contains block grant money. That money, if used, will lead to the testing. And, let's face it, most states are broke thanks to our HUMUNGOUS deficit and Bush's piss-down, I mean, trickle-down, theory of economics. (Or, as his Dad, viewed it: "VooDoo Economics.")

The bill sailed through Congress, albeit, with half the funding Dubya wanted. And, right now, it's hanging over our heads like the sword of Damocles (or Eli Lilly). If it comes to fruition, not only will children be tested, but pregnant women (who seem depressed), teachers and even parents whose behavior may be suspect. Presumably, parents could lose custody of their children if they balked at being medicated. There are even provisions for parents with "addictive" behavior and an anti-marijuana treatment that will cure Mom and Dad of bogarting their joints at PTA meetings.

The New Freedom Commission also recommended mental screening for anyone entering the juvenile or criminal justice systems, child welfare system, homeless shelters, hospitals, senior housing, long-term care facilities, nursing homes "and other settings where populations are at high risk. Screening should also occur periodically after an individual enters any of these facilities."

A group called Fighting Child Protective Services warns, "Just like many other laws Bush signed, the 'New Freedom Initiative' is deceptively named. This is not for more freedom. It is for violations of our freedoms and our rights to decline intrusive health evaluations. Do you realize in 2003 Bush signed a law called 'Keeping Children and Families Safe' that renewed child welfare funding and included a new clause allowing caseworkers to intrude on your formerly private medical records? Do you think your children and families are safer now?"

So, what to you call such an insane program as The New Freedom Initiative?

A start.

Like the witch-hunts in Salem were a start.

Says the Association of American Physicians & Surgeons spokeswoman Kathryn Serkes, re: the ambiguousness of the law: "Once it's established and has funding, a program exhibits the nettlesome property of being self-sustaining - it gets a life of its own. More funding follows."

Officials of AAPS decry what they see as "a dangerous scheme that will heap even more coercive pressure on parents to medicate children with potentially dangerous side effects."

One of the most "dangerous side effects" from antidepressants commonly prescribed to children is suicide, regarding which AAPS added, "Further, even the government's own task force has concluded that mental health screening does little to prevent suicide."

Meanwhile, Rep. Paul says the mental testing scheme is a "Big Brother" baby step that, if unchecked, will push parental rights out of the picture.

"At issue is the fundamental right of parents to decide what medical treatment is appropriate for their children. The notion of federal bureaucrats ordering potentially millions of youngsters to take psychotropic drugs like Ritalin strikes an emotional chord with American parents, who are sick of relinquishing more and more parental control to government.

"Once created, federal programs are nearly impossible to eliminate. Anyone who understands bureaucracies knows they assume more and more power incrementally. A few scattered state programs over time will be replaced by a federal program implemented in a few select cities. Once the limited federal program is accepted, it will be expanded nationwide. Once in place throughout the country, the screening program will become mandatory.

"Soviet communists attempted to paint all opposition to the state as mental illness. It now seems our own federal government wants to create a therapeutic nanny state, beginning with schoolchildren. It's not hard to imagine a time 20 or 30 years from now when government psychiatrists stigmatize children whose religious, social, or political values do not comport with those of the politically correct, secular state.

"American parents must do everything they can to remain responsible for their children's well-being. If we allow government to become intimately involved with our children's minds and bodies, we will have lost the final vestiges of parental authority. Strong families are the last line of defense against an overreaching bureaucratic state."

"The American tradition of parents deciding what is best for their children is, yet again, under attack," satd Kent Snyder of the Paul-founded Liberty Committee. "The pharmaceutical industry has convinced President Bush to support mandatory mental-health screening for every child in America, including preschool children..."

And, if Bush has his way, and the big drug companies weigh in, we'll all be tested.

It's just a matter of time.

Testing will be done to shape the children.

To get rid of the crazies, as in: anyone who thinks for themselves.

And make the NeoCon takeover of the country complete.

Maybe. In his zeal to have drug companies enter our lives big time, Bush may have "misunderestimated" the American public. Once citizens realize the impact of The New Freedom Initiative, there could be a strange alliance between conservatives, liberals and Christian Fundamentalists. True conservatives want Big Government out of their lives. Liberals will think it's a privacy issue. Fundamentalists don't embrace mind-altering drugs and are pushing for more family values. Usurping the role of the parent isn't going to play very well in that group.

Karen R. Effrem, a physician who is also on the board of directors of EdWatch, a conservative group that opposes federal control of education explained her opposition to the new law thusly: "I am concerned, especially in the schools, that mental health could be used as a wedge for diagnosis based on attitudes, values and political stances - things like perceived homophobia.

"There are several violence-prevention programs that do say if a person is homophobic, they could be considered potentially violent.

"This mental-health program could be used as an enforcement tool to impose very politically correct, anti-American curriculum."

According to Liberty Committee's Kent Snyder, the following groups have come out in opposition to the screening program: Eagle Forum, Gun Owners of America, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, Concerned Women of America, Freedom 21, the Alliance for Human Research Protection, the International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology, plus several liberal watchdog groups and the conservative Constituion Party.

American parents? Whether you live in a red state or a blue state, when the school sends you the new "testing" form? Call your local newspaper. Raise a ruckus. Talk this issue up (because the MSM isn't).

Remember the old Jesuit saying: "Give me a child until he is seven, and I will give you the man." The Jesuits were dedicated to teaching. This Administration is dedicated to monetary profit.

Now, think about this quote from Patricia Weathers, President of Able Child: "When did our government decide they had a right to override our Constitutional right to liberty and dictate to us how to live our lives?"

  HeartMath Institute
"We have a tremendous body of research here at the Institute on the heart and its influence. The fact that electrical energy produced by the heart is 60 times stronger than that of the brain is not our research; that is known by anybody involved in the biophysics field. What we've been able to show is that yes, that's true, and that frequency is being received by every single cell in the body. And the frequency content of the heart's electrical energy emission changes relative to our perceptions, how we're taking in what we're taking in. So certain heart-based types of qualities like care, appreciation or love that have often just been associated metaphorically with the heart really do produce dramatic changes in the electrical energy output of the heart when people are perceiving/receiving from a place of care or appreciation. And in turn, our research shows that when that electrical energy changes, it goes to what's called 'coherent frequency patterns'. We're able to correlate that to changes in the immune system and changes in hormonal balance. And we also see changes in perception and intelligence.         ABOUT THE SYMBOLIC ART: The symbols for the "Chalice" - or Holy Grail - that I often use are drawn essentially from ancient archetypes - including the symbol(s) composing what is known as "The Star of David," which symbols actually pre-date(s) the Jewish faith by many centuries or more. They all have their own rich meanings as related to the spiritual dilemma or paradox, balancing or synthesis of qualities (such as Yin & Yang), and healing transformation. Here, the Chalice is essentially a "cauldron" for the balancing and integrating of Humanity with the Divine - individually and communally. The "Chalice-Star" over the three traveling magi is used in my Solstice or Christmas Card design to represent our quest - in this earthly dimension of body, mind, and spirit - for the inner-most Source of one's spirit and faith -- whether that would be the Inner Christ, Inner Buddha, Inner Mohammed, or the Divine Mother's Spirit connecting All Life, etc.

              I began my studies in multi-level self-healing when in the service, in Thailand in the Winter of '73. The focus then was on self-help psychology, consciousness, and eastern and western mystical perspectives. This continued through my university studies in Norman, OK '74-'79. 1980 took me into naturopathic studies, primarily nutrition and herbology when I lived in Oklahoma City. Not seeing the naturopathic doctor route as affordable at the time, I found direction via a five-evening massage course, Fall '83. That led to a six month professional practice, followed up with the training in Sante Fe, NM, '84-'85 (detailed in my on-line brochure).
        Since then I have practiced massage and/or healing facilitation for others, initially in Santa Fe, NM (during/after my training), then San Louis Obispo, CA, and Seattle, WA. This includes exploring personal challenges and self-healing methodology. A session may include various energy-body-work modalities, Body/Energy-Awareness based Preventative Health Maintenance Instruction, or only Reiki or relaxation work in total silence. A client chooses based on whatever stress, pain, or concerns are present at that session. A client may request a "Body Pattern Reading," as well as various massage/bodywork therapies, all of which techniques are listed & described in the Body-Mind Integration Therapies Brochure. Individual, program, and 3-6 week interval-based rates are available.

My professional interests have primarily centered in three areas:
        1) Body-Centered Psycho-Spiritual Process (as in "Hakomi" style of) counseling and bodywork, including as assessing an individual for the most efficient means of addressing connective tissue injury, short and long term, and the most efficient application of the results of that assessment (on physical and/or emotional levels);
        2) in the basic hows & whys related to the storage & release of tension and "body memory" in the muscles and fascia. and in the related fascia memory storage dynamics - referring to the technical aspects of neuro-physical interface between connective tissue, emotion, and the brain);
        3) "Chalice-Bridging" style chakra balancing, including Reiki (energy work) - based in the perspective that the chalice, far more than just a cup in this interpretation, is about the human embodiment of Spirit into the three "lower bodies" (mental, emotional, and physical) which compose the "Body-Mind". Which is also a "cauldron" for the balancing and integrating of Humanity with the Divine - individually and communally.

BODY-MIND AWARENESS, at the core of preventive health awareness, is one of the most simple, efficacious, & cost-effective forms of HEALTH INSURANCE there can be. Hence, massage is far from just "a luxury item," and bodywork therapies can be indispensable for the healing of certain conditions.

MUSCLES RELATE TO ATTACHMENTS - to what we use to take our stance, to hold our place, to perceive and respond to our environment, and to extend who we are and/or want to be. Or used to be (in too many cases, perhaps).
That speaks not only to the body's condition and function, but to how it communicates awareness of where one is along one's path (of becoming who one truly is).

THE BODY IS . . . among other amazing things, a unique communications system -- intimately linked with one's TOTALITY.
Establishing rapport with one's body can be a PATH to self realization.

ONE OF MY DREAMS is a society where/in all children are taught how to feel/see/read their own body-mind communications such that preventive health maintenance eventually becomes second nature. And actually, for the most part, they would be encouraged to re-awaken and build upon what I believe to be a NATURAL INCLINATION - conscious self-healing and continuous expansion of awareness.

And the above goes FOR ALL OTHER ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES, to the degree that one utilizes them to improve such awareness and causative/pro-active connection with one's body-mind, and to employ the most effective tools for maintaining/improving one's health under any given condition or circumstance.

WHY DOES BODY AWARENESS = OPTIMUM HEALTH INSURANCE ?
And How does "Body-Parenting" relate to that in Body-Mind Integration ?
