Reiki / Qigong/ Energy-Work
Put very simply, it's like applying jumper cables to a battery and conveying a charge via the natural flow of energy through established channels in the body. How? We are bio-electric beings and thereby responsive to the focused intentions of our own mind. To the degree we give ourselves or someone else permission to assist in that focus, we can benefit. Reiki, a popular form of energy-work, provides the basic resource "fuel" for healing, as it "reminds" the cells of their originally designed connectedness with their "blueprint", & optimizes interconnections within and among the cells for enzyme activity, circulation, including for the central nervous system, spinal fluid, & brain. The effects of Reiki are generally perceived as subtle, yet lending both tranquility & vitality. That of Qigong & other energy-work systems may be more pronounced as they are usually more specifically directed.

Body-Mind Awareness and Preventative Health Maintenance
I teach self-healing awareness exercises & attitudes, and realistic goal-setting: Based on an assessment of holding and movement patterns (developed by the body's responses to stress), I teach body-awareness techniques that facilitate monitoring and adjusting one's physical body (postural and/or muscle tone). One can then use this awareness during subsequent experiences of stress-loading events to break unproductive and/or painful habits. I suggest various homework exercises, reading material, web site and email access to many resources for health and healing. See essay, "Tensing Yoga - Exercises for Self Healing, Preventative Maintenance, & Mind-Body Awareness" regarding one of the main techniques that I teach. A 2010 addition to instruction (very basic as yet) is Yi Ren Medical Qigong, based on the training of Dr. Guan-Cheng Sun.
Counseling Approach, Instruction
My perspective is based in a blend of Hakomi "Body-Centered Psycho-Spiritual Process," Gestalt Psychology, Buddhist psychology, and New Thought philosophy (works with mind-body-spirit interface), and a preventative health maintenance perspective based in the principles of Naturopathy, presented very well in Yi Ren Medical Qigong. You may find elaboration on these approaches, methodologies, and perspectives at and via the extended brochure, and in the essays, "A Gestalt Perspective and Seven Phases of Personal Growth", and "Body-Mind Integration in the Personal Growth Process", the basic hows & whys related to the storage & release of tension and "body memory" in the muscles and fascia, (published in Massage Magazine, July-August, 1992), and other essays mentioned via the reference section further below. Also included are references for Yi Ren Medical Qigong, naturopathic perspective, body-memory, pain control, and more.

My “Niche”: What Makes My Work Different?
|
¤ “You know exactly where to go” These are the words I often hear, and I believe that refers to my skills in trouble-shooting -- How I read the textures of muscles, sense the varying degrees of tension and holding patterns in the muscles, note the relationships between them, devise plans (approach & techniques) to reduce tension and patterns - all specific to that individual - and employ my 25 years of experience in accomplishing the goals of the client for a given session. I revise plans on the fly as needed to accomplish results in a relatively short time. Based on what I learn works with an individual client, I not only revise techniques, but have created many new ones for when I encounter those same conditions with another client.
|
¤ Pressure & Sensitivity: It helps greatly that I have always been unusually capable at varying the degree of pressure to apply when employing touch-based techniques. I sense and/or learn quickly the optimal amount of pressure for any given area for an individual, allowing me to work as deeply as possible without causing the muscles to tense up further. All this comes from being very strong physically, yet much enjoying the subtlest perceptions.
¤ EFT ("Emo-Free", "TAP", etc): These systems work very well (and relatively quickly) for many, and temporary relief with the more deeper seated causal elements.
|
¤ Assessment of Condition: I also fairly quickly assess the sources of tension for an individual, and employ his/her assistance as much as possible in addressing those sources - using the counseling and instruction referred to in other sections here.
¤ Bodywork Approach: My overall approach stems from my belief that touch-based therapies are primary for preventative maintenance, that this is primary to health overall. While I do enjoy a client's "Ahhhhhhhh's" from experiencing much tension release, I believe that touch-based therapies are not a "luxury," but a most basic and necessary component of well-being.

Site Navigation Note:
For many pages at this site, there are many links to essays on other pages. So... you might brief an entire page first. Then if desired on the 2nd time through, read deeper and/or choose an essay or two. Many of these essays have been written and published by myself for those with a deeper interest in Body-Mind Integration, personal growth, self-healing, etc. The "Core Body-Mind Integration Concepts in Context Chart", now at the Organization Chart page (10/10/11), may help. It compacts the key points into a relatively small visual space, and provides a summary of them and their implications relative to body-mind preventative maintenance, pain management, other aspects.

Sports Massage & Therapy for Cyclists (1200+ hrs Experience by Oct 2010)
I have been working with a few cyclists over many years, including one before and after he came to ride competitively (16yrs & 3 yrs respectively). Another (12yrs) has neuropathy in his legs. That tallies to over 1200 hrs experience by May 2011. I've learned to re-apply a primarily Esalen style training (see above) and 25+ years experience to the bodies and minds of those very intent on athletic performance and long-term health maintenance. As a result, I've developed considerable skills for working with cyclist-related complaints, minor and major injuries, as well as chronic pain, while steadily improving their body awareness for preventative maintenance. They know me for my very deep, yet highly attuned work, although I am very capable of gauging and applying what works for others. Their words are at the Testimonials page. (Note: I have not been a cyclist since before it was called that, but I lettered in wrestling in high school, ran a 10.0 100-yrd dash, while a very slow 5 miles, and have kept in good shape since then.)
The most common problem areas for cyclists are the quads and the knees (with apparent controversy as to which), but troubleshooting - *which* muscles are pulling on the knees and *how* - determines the efficiency of ones work with the system as a whole. And my clients will tell you that I have a CSI mind in trouble-shooting with tenacity in focusing and applying the work. Cyclists should know that the location and position of the bicycle seat can effect many elements in the tension and health of many key muscles, from the hands to the feet, as well as the neck.
Yes, you get a few things here that you can't do for yourself, including instruction in "Tensing Yoga" - stretching with *yogawareness* - for power, flexibility, and *Long-Term* endurance. :-)
Therapy For Cyclists essentially includes:
* Pre-ride massage stretches and warms the muscles, readies them for the ride.
* Post-ride massage stimulates blood flow, accelerates the recovery process, relaxes the muscles, and helps prevent soreness.
* Maintenance massage maintains health, flexibility, and vitality.
Boomer Note: "According to a Wall Street Journal analysis of injury statistics, injuries to Americans in the 35- to 54-year-old age group are climbing much faster than the group's population... No. 4 on the ouch list behind only basketball, soccer and softball." -- Doug Freed in "Massage & Cycling A Winning Combination"
